Andrew Archer — Melbourne, Australia

“With portraiture, facial expression really is everything. I love the more comical, over-the-top approach. The look on someone’s face sets the tone for the entire image, right from the early rough sketches. It’s essential for re-enforcing the mood or subject of the article.”

A penchant for fluid line work, offbeat colour palettes and strong compositions defines the work of illustrator Andrew Archer. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, as a child he grew up surrounded by pens and paint, and nowadays mixes traditional and digital techniques together to create rich narratives within his images. Inspired by Surrealism, juxtapositions and wood-block prints, his work also derives influences from his travels and interest in Japanese Edo-period art.
