“I think that posters are just as important as they’ve ever been — if anything, they’re more relevant now, as their importance expands across digital platforms. The idea of what a poster can be becomes more flexible with social media — every ad, flyer, or Instagram post can act as one. Posters typically work on two levels: you have the big, arresting type/image that draws the viewer in, and then once you have their attention, there’s the smaller, supporting text that provides more information. This model works well on social media, where people tend to have short attention spans.”

Devin Washburn is a graphic designer based in Brooklyn, New York City. He is currently the art director of Lucky Peach. He has worked for Rodrigo Corral, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Penguin Books, The New York Times and Medium. Devin graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2011, where he is now teaching as an adjunct professor. In 2013, Devin’s book-jacket design was named as one of The New York Times’s Best Book Covers of the Year.
