“If you are working on a piece about a famous figure, then it is really important that you get a good likeness. That is the whole point of the image and everything else is just additional. Once you’ve got that, then you can enhance it with colours and atmosphere to create an arresting piece – something with an edge, something worthwhile and different from just using photography.”

Just as likely to be packed with weird beasts as famous figures, the editorial work of UK-based illustrator Joe Wilson shows expert draftsmanship. His education at Leeds University led him to focus on etching and screen-printing, which has profoundly influenced his approach to image-making. Now, using a toolbox of pencils, ink and digital colour, he adeptly recreates the aesthetic of traditional print-making, leading to highly detailed scenes with plenty of vintage flair.
