Lena Steinkühler — Dortmund, Germany

"In my opinion ornamental design is playful, organic and lives from repeating something over and over again and has no clear rules to follow. It’s the opposite of technology and construction and is created by accidents. Trends come and go, but ornamental design is obvious throughout the centuries. These things did not disappear for decades, they were simply neglected while design underwent a series of revolutions, digital and otherwise."

Currently studying at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund (Germany) with a view to gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in the fields of design and media communication, Lena Steinkühler created New York Biotapes as her graduation project. She filled up a section of metropolitan New York with vegetation that adapts to its surrounding technology and given situation, thus making for a symbiotic co-existence.
