Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry — Prague, Czech Republic

“We’ve created a few graphic letterings that for the most part accompany the graphic element that supports the poster or other applications. Classic typefaces we’ve made for typesetting used to be basically for our own designs and after that, turned into retail typefaces for sale. It’s always really helpful in terms of graphic-design applications to draw your own letter shapes, especially when none of the fonts you have are suitable for the specific project.”

Jan Horcik and Filip Matejicek, currently based in Prague, founded Heavyweight in 2013 during their studies at the Studio of Typography at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in the Czech Republic capital. During their studies, they had enough time to think about the concept and direction of the type foundry. Increasingly, they created their own custom fonts that they used later in their graphic works where they could adapt them to the ideal shape. Their intention was to create fonts for the particular needs of graphic designers. They gradually built up their collection, starting with Topol.
