Playing with words
Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but it is the words themselves that build the scenery for what is being said. If there were to be a war between words and pictures, then typography would be the mediator.
In the language of design, words are the fonts/typeface and pictures are the graphics. Typography is simply a combination of both and a potent element in graphic design, where there is less concern for readability than for the potential of using type in an artistic manner.
When a font designer no longer only designs fonts for their own sake, but fonts with particular applications, such as for posters or other promotional items such as catalogues, and a graphic designer will custom-make fonts for specific projects: album covers, fashion campaigns, etc. Where does one stop and the other start?
We invited seven font/graphic designers and asked them this question. Some of their answers surprised us. We also spotlight a film director who has recently made a documentary film on one of the most common font types: Helvetica.
