While pigeon racing is growing exponentially in the United States and Asia, with China in the lead, in the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain it is on the wane and the population of pigeon fanciers is rapidly ageing. For ten years the photographer Zak Waters followed various clubs and keen practitioners and lovers of the sport in England. The exhibition ‘Birdmen’ presents a moving portrait of small clubs of people working together intensely to keep up the excitement in the competition for trophies and the ambitious breeding of champion pigeons. Waters’ black-and-white photographs lovingly portray the relation between people and pigeons.
