Javier de Riba — Barcelona, Spain

What makes a good pattern design? “I like how the repetition of an element creates new rhythms, not just a multiplication. I work on patterns that produce new shapes that emerge from the intersections. These shapes allow me to interpret the patterns as a unity, like a net that catches you.”

Javier de Riba is a Catalan visual-artist member of the Reskate Arts & Crafts Collective. He claims that with his interventions in the public space he tries to question the value of objects and spaces. Among his best-known works are “Varnish”, where he works with varnish on collected wood pieces; and “Floors”, a work of interventions on abandoned floors.
