Journal — Paul Spencer & John-Paul Warner — Leeds, UK

“We have to think a lot more about how the design impacts the existing environment, so we look at the suitability of materials, structures and processes — both aesthetically and in terms of durability. When we are working in 3D, we think about size and positioning, light source and direction, viewing angles and reading heights, visitor routes, visitor interaction and experience, obstacles, accessibility and hazards. There’s the need to understand production methods and installation techniques that are usually more associated with construction than graphic design. It can be quite a different process and require other skills.”

Journal is a graphic-design and brand agency, founded in 2013. It now works with some of the UK’s foremost arts and heritage organisations including English Heritage, Leeds Art Gallery and the National Trust.
