MUTI — Cape Town, South Africa

What makes a good pattern design? “It depends entirely on what the pattern is being used for and how. We need to take into consideration the size at which it’ll be viewed and how it will be applied as certain production methods have colour or style limitations. There are obviously technical considerations such as seamless repeats and the integration of artwork from one panel to the next that need to be taken into consideration. If there are obvious breaks in the tile, the whole illusion is broken!”

MUTI is a multi-disciplinary creative studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. It consists of a dedicated team of illustrators, designers and animators who are passionate about producing original and inspiring work, from lettering to icons, digital painting to animation. The studio was started in 2011 when Clinton Campbell and Miné Day joined forces after having worked together previously. Brad Hodgskiss joined as the third creative director in 2013. Since then MUTI has grown to a team of 12 animators, illustrators, designers and letterers.
