“Designers need to pay attention to what the font expresses. What does the image of the letters convey? What emotions? What connotations (historical, cultural, technical…?) Letters have little voices of their own, and it’s vital to know how to discern them to enhance the message shared. Pairing is the same story. I’d say that you also need to be able to make the two personalities of the two fonts talk to each other. It all comes down to finding the right balance.”
Morgane VanTorre is a type designer, graphic designer, calligrapher and teacher based in Paris. Passionate about the materiality of our written language and what its forms convey beyond its meaning, her work is based on a strong interest in the typographic sign as a whole. From conception to development to completion, she enjoys creating and producing typefaces or lettering for local and international clients or just for herself. She also offers art direction, editorial design and custom calligraphy services. Teaching typography (design and layout), organising workshops and giving lectures are also an integral part of her work. She loves sharing and passing on information.
