Ribbonesia – Baku Maeda — Sapporo, Japan

“I do not consider myself a designer but as someone trying to create something that has never been seen before. That is tough because there is so much good work around the world being created every day, but searching for new solutions is the most important part of design and it is always fun.”

Ribbonesia is a contemporary collective founded by Japanese artist Baku Maeda. Based in Sapporo, it creates fantastic characters and imaginary creatures by bending and twisting colourful ribbons. The design team of Ribbonesia is also constantly exploring alternative materials such as paper, wood, plastic and metal in all shapes and sizes, trying to capture a form of design that is underpinned by conceptual thinking and meticulous attention to project details and product innovation.
