IdN v27n2: Packaging Design Issue — Packing With a Punch

Successful packaging design is a huge challenge for graphic designers. They have to leave their comfortable 2D platforms and step into a real world full of all kinds of different materials. Touch suddenly becomes a crucial selling point. The size of the package can certainly restrict creativity, given that the material used has to both protect the product and attract people to want to purchase it. So a fine balance has to be struck.

In this issue, we have gathered together some 50 creatives who have been kind enough to share some of their packaging-design tips and experiences. When asked to forecast future trends for packaging design, words such as “sustainable” and “environmental” frequently arose. This, then, is the new challenge: how to create environmentally friendly packaging?

Packaging Design

Good packaging design should be able to contain, protect, preserve, transport and inform. But when the product is food-related, the last attribute on that list is uppermost in importance. Think of all the ingredients that could trigger allergies — wheat, peanuts or milk, for instance. If such information is missing, or open to misinterpretation, the result could be fatal.

The challenge is essentially one of size. How to fit all the vital information into an attractive format? Together with instructions as to usage, warnings and directions for obtaining further information, where to place enquiries. All of these aspects can have a major impact on customers, manufacturers, advertisers and sales personnel alike.
