[‘mandl|auɡə] by Julia Danckwerth — Berlin, Germany
The illustrations by Julia Danckwerth deals with a maximum of minimalism. She works almost exclusively by way of analogy and collage. Her preference is for especially delicate, thin pencil drawings. The distinctive, serious and often grim features of her motives are as characteristic as their heads. The faces with gaps and missing gestures are united in a weird, almost scurrile mood, which is not revealed right away. The uncanny is hidden rather than apparently missing, and again is revealed only after a second glance. She use yellowed paper in combination with photographs, silhouettes and translucent colors as her material.
