Martin Smith has recently been commissioned by the Royal Horticultural Society to create a large kinetic centre piece for their annual flower show at the wonderful Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Responding to the stunning Lancelot “Capability” Brown designed landscape at Chatsworth, Smith developed a series of three 6 metre tall kinetic trees that are a narrative about growth and celebrate engineering in a beautiful poetic way. The sculpture is comprised of gentle rhythmical movements that draw your attention. At the very tip of each metal branch, there are delicate kinetic sails that respond to the wind and catch the light.
