“Designing decorative and display typefaces presents unique challenges due to their distinctive nature and intended use. It’s best to have a usage in mind, either provided by a specific design brief or restrictions that the type designer sets, in order to control the design parameters with set criteria. When I design a display family, I take versatility into account. It should work well in various contexts, whether in print or digital media, and across a different range of sizes. Another important characteristic is to maintain consistency across the character set. That can be challenging, especially when incorporating decorative elements.”

Sabina Chipară offers support to design agencies and type foundries as a consultant.
